Piriformis Syndrome – The Pinched Nerve
In most people, the sciatic nerve passes right by the piriformis muscle. For these people, piriformis syndrome is rare. In 10% of the population, however, the sciatic nerve actually passes through the piriformis muscle. In these people, when the piriformis contracts or spasms, it compresses the sciatic nerve, causing pain in the buttock, running all the way down the leg. Some of the causes of this syndrome include repetitive activity, muscle imbalance, and prolonged sitting.
